Movies

Here's a brief list of Christmas movies to cheer you during the holiday season. The movie ratings are my own, if you will look to the right you will find a place to rate your favorite movies, or submit your own favorites! Now sit back, relax and enjoy!

Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas
This Disney flick is told as a flashback to Belle's imprisonment in the Beast's castle. Belle is determined to hold a Christmas celebration in spite of the Beast's orders to the contrary. All the main characters from the original return. As always I am delighted with any Disney movie. ***

A Christmas Carol
Dickens' Christmas classic first came to the screen in 1951. Alistair Sim as Scrooge is the highlight of this tale of a workaholic who learns, in an extraordinary way, the real meaning of the spirit of Christmas. One of my favorites and loved by the whole family. ****

Christmas in Connecticut
An oldie starring Barbara Stanwyck. Stanwyck plays a writer for a women's magazine whose popularity is based on a lie. Stanwyck is not married, as her readers believe; she does not live in the country and can't boil water. As a publicity stunt, Stanwyck's publisher invites Morgan for a weekend stay at her farm and Stanwyck must try and be the woman her readers think she is. A fun movie, but the kiddos find it a little boring. ***

A Christmas Story
A 1983 adaptation of Jean Shepherd's classic short story about a young boy's desperate longing for a Red Ryder BB gun. The kids and hubby liked this one, but it gets a thumbs down from me. *

Ernest Saves Christmas
Ernest helps a weary Santa by taking over some of his Christmas deliveries. A great favorite with the kids. **

Home Alone
Macaulay Culkin is Kevin, the 8-year-old mistakenly left home alone when his family goes to Europe for the holidays. When two bumbling burglars break into the house, Kevin devises some pretty great tricks to foil their plans. Pretty good the first time around, but loses it's appeal in reruns. **

How the Grinch Stole Christmas
The Grinch is unhappy at the thought of the local villagers having a grand time at their Christmas revels. Disguised as Santa Claus, his dog posing as a reindeer, the Grinch raids the village and steals everything to do with Christmas, leaving the villagers wondering what kind of Christmas they'll have this year. The kids never tire of this one. ***

It's a Wonderful Life
Jimmy Stewart as the small-town family man who one day wishes he'd never been born--and gets his wish. To me Christmas is not complete without at least one viewing of this movie, to be seen again and again. ****

Miracle on 34th Street
There are two film versions of the Christmas fantasy about a Macy's Santa Claus who insists he's really Kriss Kringle. The 1947 version is the only one worth watching in my book. Starring Edmund Gwen as Santa Claus and the young Natalie Wood as the girl who comes to believe in him. Maureen O'Hara also stars. A family classic. ***

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
Made in 1989, this is the third installment of the adventures of the Griswold family. This one finds the clan preparing for a family Christmas at home. Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo star as Clark and Ellen Griswold. As much as I hate to admit it, this one always makes me laugh. ***

The Nightmare Before Christmas
This 1993 animated musical by Tim Burton is the tale of Jack Skellington, the lord of Halloweentown who, with the help of his ghoulish friends, kidnaps Santa Claus and takes over the reigns of his sleigh on Christmas eve. I didn't care for this one, but seems to have appeal to the younger set. *

Prancer
This 1989 film is the story of a young motherless girl who finds a wounded reindeer in the woods and believing him to be Prancer, one of Santa's reindeer, lovingly nurses him back to health in hopes of returning him to his place on Santa's sleigh by Christmas eve. Sam Elliott is the father who comes to believe in his daughter's mission. It will warm your heart and lift your spirits. ***

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
What Christmas would ever be complete, without the timeless story of Rudolph, Santa's lead reindeer. This is on that I still watch again and again. The kids love it! ****

The Santa Clause
1994 film featuring Tim Allen. Allen is a divorced dad who accidentally knocks Santa off the roof. Taking on Santa's holiday duties (the Santa Clause), Allen begins to take on Santa's physical appearance as well. Could have been better. **

Scrooged
Bill Murray stars in this 1988 film. Murray is a mean-spirited television executive, Bobcat Goldthwait as Bob Cratchet and Carol Kane is the very weird Ghost of Christmas Present. Hubby loved this, but not my cup of tea. **
